In 2013 Carolyn Mcdonald experienced her first seizure, shortly after which Carolyn was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiform. An aggressive brain tumour in which less than 5% of sufferers live longer than 5 years.
Since this time Carolyn has undergone 3 major brain surgeries in conjunction with multiple rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In May this year a second tumour was discovered in the left side of Carolyn’s brain, an extremely rare mirror image of the initial treated tumour located on the right. After her second surgery in August, Carolyn was diagnosed with Apraxia of speech, losing all ability to speak and swallow. Today Carolyn starts an intensive bevacizumab (Avastin) regime with Temozolomide concurrently to fight the tumours.
Unfortunately, this drug is not covered by the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) in Australia and without Carolyn having private health insurance, each treatment costs around $5000.
